Your Moon Sign & Nakshatra
Your Vedic Moon sign reflects your inner emotional world. Your Janma Nakshatra — the birth star the Moon was in at the moment you were born — reveals a deeper layer of your emotional nature and life unfolding.
Which moment applies?
This local birth time occurred twice on this date due to the transition from daylight saving time to standard time. Choose which moment applies to your birth details.
Not sure? Choose your best estimate — the Moon moves relatively fast, so the Nakshatra may remain uncertain in that case. If possible, consult your birth certificate or birth record.
Your pada refines how the energy of your Nakshatra expresses itself personally. The full meaning is explored in a Personal Nakshatra Analysis.
Your birth star contains several layers that a short calculator can't reveal. In a Personal Nakshatra Analysis you'll discover how your Nakshatra and pada play out in your character, talents, relationships, life lessons and spiritual development — always viewed within the context of your birth chart.
- Deeper meaning of your Nakshatra and pada
- Talents and inner motivations
- Relationship and life patterns
- Personal growth points and a fitting spiritual direction
How is this calculated?
Your Moon sign is determined by the sidereal position of the Moon at the moment of your birth. The 360° sidereal zodiac is divided for this purpose into twelve signs of 30° each.
Your Nakshatra (birth star) is determined by dividing that same sidereal zodiac into 27 Nakshatras of 13°20′ each. Each Nakshatra in turn consists of four padas of 3°20′, which further refine the energy of the Nakshatra.
We use Astronomy Engine for the Moon's position and a linear approximation for the Lahiri ayanamsa. This implementation is not identical to Swiss Ephemeris, Jagannatha Hora or other professional astrology software. Small differences in degrees and arcminutes are therefore possible, especially when the Moon is close to a Nakshatra or pada boundary. Always compare results using the same ayanamsa, ephemeris and timezone settings.
